Chaco Sandals was founded in 1989 by Mark Paigen. He worked for a custom shoe manufacturer in Northern California, then moved to Colorado and became a local river guide. However, he was not satisfied with footwear for outdoor sports, so he decided to use his experience and knowledge as a shoemaker to make his own sandals. Many of the features of Chaco Sandals today, such as the Z2 strap shape and replaceable soles, are also Mark's policies that have been passed down since the company was founded. Currently, he continues to pursue comfortable designs from an ergonomic perspective, with the help of an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in feet.
